Karen writes for relaxation and began after, having belonged to an am dram group for 10 years, she thought 'I could do this'. Her first play took an incredible 18 years to write (in between having two children and a life) but once it was finished nothing could stop her. Despite no longer being an am dram member she has very fond memories of treading the boards and enjoys sitting in the audience reminiscing about the struggle to learn lines. She occasionally goes to watch her own plays being performed - always incognito - and is always amazed at how the same play can be interpreted in so many different ways. |
Having just completed her first novel she may well return to writing plays, she finds it a lot easier. 'Apart from being so much shorter, plays rely very much on the interpretation by the director/producer, so apart from the basic stage directions it is left up to them to use their imagination, and not so much the writer. I think this is why the same play can come across so differently when produced by different groups'. |
Her ambition is to see one of her plays in the West End, she's not fussy which particular theatre! |
