Inspector Grayson is reminiscing about a notorious murder case he was involved in at Morpeth Manor Hotel which occurred just as the last guests were preparing to leave. He enlists the help of the audience as events are replayed for their benefit. The few people remaining immediately prior to the refurbishment of the hotel were
