(And if that isn't enough, there's added confusion from a snake-oil salesman and his Injun accomplice, a judge who cheats at cards and a troublesome barmaid.)

Manchester, Protestant by persuasion and for Parliament, resists under the leadership of some of the deputy-lieutenants. The play recounts their resistance, culminating in Derby's siege of the town in September 1642.
