Aesop's Famous Fables and Twisted Tales by Peter Nuttall

All Is Not Lost by Nicholas Richards
RolesMinimum Male roles = 1. Minimum Female roles = 1. Minimum total with doubling = 17. Minimum total without doubling = 29. No chorus. Most of the characters are written male, but really it doesn't matter. Characters are a mix of ages, so could suit a mixed age company.

SynopsisSir Ambrosius Pengarth used to be the valiant, beast-slaying ruler of the Five Hills, but now is more interested in playing his lyre than protecting the people. When rumours of a dragon spread through the castle, his young son and nephew bunk off lessons to go and slay it themselves.

Caesar and the Pirates [Full Version] by Nicholas Richards and Timothy Hallett
RolesMinimum Male roles = 9. Minimum Female roles = 1. Minimum total with doubling = 18. Minimum total without doubling = 29. Chorus. Flexible - the pirates roles could easily be shared by a smaller number and other doubling is possible. On the other hand, there is scope for pirate and soldier chourses. Only one specfied female role - Venus! - but others could be cast female.

Don Q And His Squire Sancho by Dick Caram
RolesMinimum Male roles = 0. Minimum Female roles = 0. Minimum total with doubling = 14. Minimum total without doubling = 28. Chorus. Whilst most of the characters are written male (with three written female), the author believes that indicating the gender of the character by costume is sufficient!

SynopsisMiguel de Cervantes's famed tale of the eccentric knight and his inept but trusting squire.
Alonso Quixano is obsessed with tales of chivalry. So much so that he believes himself to be a knight - Don Quixote - and he sets out to seek adventure, with a peasant farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire.

The Horrible Hot Air Homicide by Ray Lawrence

StyleMelodrama set in Victorian times, but written in the 21st century - so something of a send-up of the format.
Synopsis'The Horrible Hot Air Homicide' - or 'Fanny's Free For All' sees the wicked squire in pursuit of the poor heroine, Fanny. However, in fear that his past misdeeds will be exposed, the squire frames his rival for murder, then furnishes a fiendish fate for Fanny.

StyleA one act Renaissance-themed school play with music.
SynopsisA troupe of re-enactors assemble in a small town to stage their annual Renaissance Fair - just as contractors with the Dept. of Buildings arrive to announce plans for the sale of the land they are on. The narrator arranges a stay of execution and the show, featuring an archery contest, juggling jesters, a jousting match and not one, but three rival queens, can go on. When the contractors return, (with donuts to share), the actors make their sad goodbyes and exit. The clever Narrator, however, makes a discovery that saves the Renaissance Fair and brings the charming village of Notting-Sher-Wessex-Wood back.
